Crew Member Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
